Like it or not, globalization is here to stay. The days of protectionism, while comforting to some during times of economic uncertainty, are long gone. America and the world are trading at levels never seen before in the history of man. As the most recent economic collapse has shown quite vividly, markets are interconnected in a way that an investment banker in London, Shanghai or Dubai is affected by a mortgage default in Los Angeles, California or Detroit, Michigan.
That does not mean that people and governments cannot influence the way we continue to trade. Indeed, it is our government's responsibility to look out for both works and consumers at home, while being mindful of the results of those trade deals abroad. Our very national security interests are at stake.
Do we accept and sign trade agreements with foreign nations that solely look to enhance the profits of multi-national corporations, lowering prices and exporting American jobs? Alternatively, we can trade on the basis of mutual benefit, specializing in areas where one nation has a clear advantage, while raising the living standards of workers by guaranteeing decent wages. The question becomes: free trade or fair trade? Availability: Kindletm Nooktm Other | | | Detroit: A City on the Brink Political

It is almost an intrinsic part of American life to go to the polls on the first Tuesday after the first Monday of November. Election Day is a time when all of the rhetoric, tracking polls, campaign events, television commercials and speeches are set aside. It is a time when Americans decide the future of their country and ultimately steer the course of history.
Elections are the driving force of a democracy. They give us confidence in our government, establish legitimacy for our leaders and provide a voice to every citizen that chooses to engage in their right. In a world full of oppression and corruption, our democratic process is something that we take for granted. Until the recent presidential election cycles of 2004 and 2008, participation was at historic lows.
That began to change dramatically, particularly with young voters, as two heavyweights in the Democratic Party scrapped with one another over the first half of 2008. The election of 2008 is one that had unexpected twists and turns seemingly every week.
An Election to Remember: Obama, Clinton and the Never Ending Primary of 2008 is a look at this historic race between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton from the perspective of a political blogger. Full of analysis, statistics and facts, An Election to Remember balances facts with partisan opinions. This book captures the intensity of the 2008 Democratic primary as it happened. The current debate over immigration policy in the United States divides political parties and individuals alike. Both sides would agree that the immigration system is broken. Evidence of this systematic failure is glaring: there are twelve million undocumented immigrants living in the United States, the federal government lacks a comprehensive enforcement and naturalization strategy, and sanctuary cities have been created to protect undocumented immigrants from deportation.
Cities such as Chicago and San Francisco have limited ability to deal with immigration issues, yet have acted to protect their citizens from deportation. By providing services to undocumented residents, cities have been forced to live with the consequences of an inadequate federal response to an issue that the Constitution delegates to the federal government. With a more sensible immigration strategy in place, there would be no need for sanctuary cities.
This book explores the sanctuary city movement in detail. First, we will look at the life of an undocumented immigrant that came to America and now lives in a sanctuary city. Next, we will explore the history of immigration in the United States, how federal policy has changed over time, and how cities have responded to these changes. Finally, we will consider two examples of sanctuary cities: Chicago and San Francisco. Availability: Kindletm Nooktm Other | | | The Nowhere October Surprise Political
