In 1975, when in his mid-twenties, Brendan Gisby - spurred on by a press report on "The warming of relations between the Republic of China and the USSR" - put his imaginative prowess of words to work, together with the courage of his convictions, and the then-full-blooded youth (in his own words "I was further Right than Attila the Hun") began to write his own version of what might happen should these two Communist giants combine and collude to dominate the world.
The result, some 30 years later due to the intervention of life and his career, is "The Olive Branch". Set a few years into the future, this gripping and scintillating yarn has all the necessary ingredients and more for a first class read. Combining the horrors of war with the scenic beauty of surrounding countryside, and the essential underlying blossoming of first love, this book provokes a host of emotions within the reader - not least of which is the humbling realisation of how lucky we are to have our freedom. True evil never dies; it just lays dormant waiting for the right time to awaken. In Ireland today there are many green and fertile acres that lie unplowed. Some are rumoured to be graveyards where the victims were buried in their thousands in unmarked graves. Others are beside former workhouses, only their ruins visible among the weeds. No builder will build here. There are also many places that are unmapped and its only word of mouth that has marked them as such. Lonely spots, on empty stretches of road, that the old women still whisper about late at night and cross themselves in fear. There is one such graveyard that was meant to be the resting-place of over a hundred of these unfortunate victims. An acre or more of unconsecrated ground into which their bodies were thrown one after the other. Some are buried alone, found decomposing on the side of the road or in their small tumble down cottages. They were hauled by cart to be covered by the damp earth in order to try and stop the spread of disease. Others are in groups, families that huddled together for warmth in the dreadful winter of 1847 and waited for death to relieve them of their suffering. There is also a mass grave where it is said that over fifty bodies are buried. Though these people will never be forgotten they remain just part of a tragic history. There are no stones that list their names, nothing to mark their passing, no sign that this was ever a graveyard. Still, the very air around it should warn the unwary that this is a place of deep unrest. The bushes and trees that border it on all sides are overgrown and have tangled themselves around one another for comfort. Despite the warmth of a summer’s day there is a chill in the air that causes the hair to stand on end and goose pimples to rise on the skin. The many branches and thickets make it an ideal nesting place but there are no birds there. The absence of their song is a chilling reminder of what is lying beneath the earth, waiting. The ground is rutted in places; the deep furrows of the funeral carts made over a hundred and fifty years ago are carved into the land. There are other holes that are so deep it makes walking precarious and one has to choose their step with care. It is not the sort of place to fall and lie injured as dark closes in and the graveyard comes to life. And there is a sort of life in this dead place, though it is not of this human world. The cool evening breeze picks up the first faint whispers that seem to circle around the field. Faint echoes of long ago that remain captured in time and replay the suffering over and over again. The sound of a mother weeping as she places her child in the dark hole and hurries the earth over it, wanting to be done and yet not wanting to leave her baby. She cries in misery and despair knowing as she rakes the earth with her fingers to form a mound that she will have to repeat this act three more times until she, finally, succumbs to death. There’s another sound, the sound of children laughing. Little ones that once walked the land, little fingers that once clutched adult hands are there. Unaware that they are dead, they run and play in the high grass, yelling, laughing, whispering, theirs is a world of the night. And deep in the corner of the graveyard lies the cause of such unrest, Jack Carey. Christened Black Jack by those that knew him in life he is not finished with tormenting them in death. His evil moves like tentacles through the soil, tainting everything it touches and spreading misery and unrest in its path. It moves over the bones of the dead like a dark shadow, prodding them awake and it would have stayed this way throughout time but for one thing, an ambitious builder. When the teeth of the big earthmovers first encountered the bones they started a chain of disaster. Had they stopped then, had they refused to continue with the desecration it might have been averted? As it was they followed orders and dug into the north most part of the graveyard, scooping up the rag-covered bones and the rotten wooden playthings of the children. These they dumped unceremoniously into blazing oil barrels and went back to their work. The workers frightened one another with tales of strange shapes in the trees and whisperings that made them uncomfortable. Each tale was met with laughter and there was much back slapping by their companions; but this did nothing to dispel the feeling of unease When he had finished, the builder had taken more then a third of the graveyard and what was left he cordoned off; replanting the bushes and trees. Within six months he had built twenty-seven houses, dream homes he called them. They would become such for the residents but it would be the stuff of nightmares, for Black Jack was abroad again and it would have much wiser to have let him sleep.
